Union County Electric Cooperative is a member of South Dakota One Call, a communications link among utilities, contractors and private individuals who work with or around underground lines or pipes. If you plan to dig a hole or trench more than a foot deep on your property, you must contact South Dakota One Call, at 800-781-7474, at least 48 hours before you plan to dig. They can help you avoid loss of service or injury by accidentally contacting an underground line.
Primary vs. Secondary Lines
When requesting an underground locate, it's helpful to know the difference between the primary and secondary lines.
Primary Lines are the lines owned and maintained by Union County Electric Cooperative that lead up to your meter. There is no charge to you to have these lines located. These lines are located by our contractor, Summit Utility Services, by contacting South Dakota One Call.
Secondary Lines are lines after the meter that lead to your home, barn, shed, etc. The member owns these line and is responsible for the maintainence, repair and location of these lines. In order to locate secondary lines, a member will need to hire someone. Union County Electric Cooperative has the equipment to locate secondary lines for a fee.
